SIP Information

What is the Open Voice Program?

AIM Call and SIP

Open Voice allows AIMĀ® Call Out customers to use a third-party software client or hardware device with their AIM Call Out account by providing a generally available SIP Gateway. There are a wide range of SIP compliant devices, including mobile handsets, PC based softphones, hardware based Telephone Adapters, IP telephones, VoIP enabled Wi-Fi handsets and VoIP enabled open source and proprietary private branch exchange (PBX) applications.

Users are required to have an AIM Call Out account to use this feature, and obtain this through the registration process. Users of the AIM Call SIP Gateway are bound by the AIM Call Out Terms of Service, which includes usage limitations, and appropriate use policies.

Developer Information

Developers are encouraged to build or test any application they wish that is consistent with the AIM Call Out Terms of Service. Any SIP stack that strictly complies with the following standards should be capable of working with the AIM Call Out SIP Gateway.

Note: We currently do not support RFC 2069 - Digest Access Authentication.

Our use of Open IETF standards should make it straight forward for any developer to integrate with our AIM Call Gateway. There are both privately and publicly available SIP implementations capable of being integrated with our service.

If issues are experienced with a device that adheres to the standard a message should be sent with the details at http://voice.aol.com/contact/open-voice-development so we can investigate.

Configuring Your Device or Application

Users must set up an AIM Call Out account at http://call-out.aim.com and add credit to their account. They will also need to set up a secure SIP device password in their Dashboard at https://dashboard.voice.aol.com/settings/sip.

To use a third party SIP application or device with the AIM Call Gateway configure it with the following settings:

SIP Gateway: sip.aol.com
STUN Server: turn.oscar.aol.com
User Identity: AOLScreenname@aol.com* or AIMScreenname@aim.com*
Device Password: As configured in the AIM Call Out Dashboard

* To confirm you have an AOL vs. an AIM screen name, check the SIP Settings page in your dashboard.

As we currently do not support inbound calls, SIP device registration should not be enabled. For details on how to do this, see the device or software manufacturer instructions.

Known Tested Devices/Clients

The AOL Voice team has successfully used the AIM Call SIP Gateway with a number of software and hardware devices. See the current list.

Known Limitations and Restrictions

We do not support SIP client register functionality as inbound telephone calls cannot be received at this time.

We offer support for devices that use the G.711u, iLBC and GSM codecs.

PC-to-PC calling is not currently supported through the interface.

Users of the AIM Call SIP Gateway are bound by the AIM Call Out Terms of Service, which includes usage limitations, and appropriate use policies.

There is currently no API to access call records, users preferences etc.

Partnership Opportunities

We plan to continually improve and upgrade the AIM Call SIP Gateway. If you are interested in partnering with the AOL Voice team or have an idea for a custom application, please send a message to our Business Development team at http://voice.aol.com/contact/business-development.
