Open Voice Announcement
April 29, 2008
We announced today that AIM Call Out customers can now use open standards protocols to make long distance calls with any SIP device that adheres to the RFC 3261 Session Initiation Protocol.
AIM Call Out customers will get the same per-minute rates on a pay-as-you-go basis with their SIP device that they do when they make calls using AIM.
The Open Voice program gives AIM Call Out users the flexibility and convenience to make calls using the device of their choice. There are a wide range of SIP-compliant devices including mobile handsets, PC-based softphones, hardware-based Telephone Adapters, IP telephones, VoIP enabled Wi-Fi handsets and VoIP enabled open source and proprietary private branch exchange (PBX) applications. We're testing a number of devices and will maintain an updated list here.
The program also helps SIP device users get awesome long distance rates to over 200 countries with a premium VoIP provider. To sign up to AIM Call Out SIP users can go to http://call-out.aim.com and choose “get started”. They’ll be asked to enter their AOL or AIM screen name to log in. If they don’t have one they can choose to get one. Then they’ll be directed to the AIM Call Out dashboard where they can add $5 dollars credit to their account and start calling with the service.
Customers can access the AIM Call SIP gateway at sip.aol.com with their screen name and a secure SIP device password that they set up on their AIM Call Out Dashboard. Get full instructions on using a SIP device with AIM Call Out.
